This year the annual Sixpenny Handley Firework display will celebrate 15 years of entertaining the crowds and raising funds for Woodcutts and other good causes. The first display was in 2003, with just £350 of fireworks and a handful of volunteers from the Scout group. With Badger setting off the rockets at the back and Skip Skip (Rob Easton) lighting the fireworks at the front, it is fair to say they were very much learning as they went. The display has now grown into one with well over £5000 of fireworks and a team of 8 setting them off, plus a quieter display for younger children earlier in the evening.
The night is only possible because of the 70 volunteers who give their time to set up, run and clear down the numerous attractions and activities. Some of these volunteers have given their time every year, notably Rob Jesse, Neil Bowes and Akela (Andy Young) who welcome guests on the main gate. The generous support from local businesses also ensures the displays can happen - and of course Steve and Leigh for allowing the use of the field at Church Farm. Over the years the teams at C&B Styles, Clarke the Butchers and Handley Post Office have sold 1000s of tickets for the event. This means villagers are able to buy discounted tickets before the night and help raise funds for the evening.
What makes the display special is that it is truly local. The meat for the bbq is from Clarkes, cider from Billy at Cranborne Chase Cider, the fantastic sweets made by the congregation of St Mary Church and omni-glow products sold by the friends of Sixpenny Handley First School.
As you would expect, the display will be even bigger and brighter this year and will celebrate the 60th Anniversary of Woodcutts Scout Group. We look forward to seeing you there and hearing the 'oooohhhs' and 'ahhhhs'.
